Philosophies
Regardless of how we identify ourselves, sometimes unfortunately and other times fortunately, it is human nature to classify the social and cultural worlds in which we live. In my work as a teacher, counselor, and researcher, many have asked me how I express my spirituality and religiosity as well as how I think and feel about other things. They often do so not because it makes that much difference in how I proceed with my work objectively as a social scientist but they do so, as labeling theorist and symbolic interactionism might argue, in order to situate my discussions in a contexts and symbolism that allows them to classify these contentions and label them in a manner that best resonates with their own or allows them to take a stance in relation to them. In other words, they do so in order to frame my thoughts in their own minds. This is a normal social psychological process that everyone performs on a daily basis.
As such, Dr. Hewlett offers here his subjective understandings (i.e. my personal philosophies) on a number issues for those who are curious about how he sees the world.
